Video Analysis from clum97
Theory
I think this video is completely attached to Reception Theory as it doesn't portray a clear story or development but simply stringed together pieces of film. I got from it, portrayals of paparazzi and the media with references to the radios and the guy taking pictures of the female behind her back. As that is my personal opinion, this is evidence of Reception Theory. However the producers might have encoded a message different to what I got from it making it negotiated Reception Theory.
I got to get into the specifics in this task and take a detailed look on the structure of a music video and how it is broken down into individual parts that eventually make up a sequence. I will have to be conscious of this when making my music video with the specific detail. It would be logical to break down each sequence in my music video to the specific detail to manage it better and get exactly what I intended initially.
Theory
- Metallica - One
This video takes elements from both of the Models. Speaking from the effects model, I think the audience can't help submit to the messages of the piece as the morals are still relevant for any time period. The use of stock images portrays this as the old footage from what looks like the 60's is being used in the late 80's and still people watch it today and has an effect on them. From the Gratification Model I think people take what they want from the video and don't simply submit to everything they're told.
- Michael Jackson - Thriller
It's quite hard to attach this video to a particular model or theory because its a fantasy/horror short film and to me doesn't portray any relevant morals or messages. But perhaps it means it does have the Reception Theory applied to it, just because I don't get anything from it doesn't mean someone else won't. In my opinion I think it is simply just a piece of entertainment and nothing more.
- Bring Me The Horizon - Sleepwalking
I think this video has elements of several theories applied to it. The Effects Model comes into play because I think anyone watching the video would see that she's in a dream state and is clearly disturbed in some way. However, the Gratification Model comes into play in a way that some people might simply see it as a story rather than an exaggerated portrayal of mental illness. I think it can be negotiated in the Reception Theory whether it is a portrayal of illness or just a story.
- Ed Sheeran - Lego House
In this video I think the Effects Model completely applies in the sense that the end portion of the video the man's obsession is revealed and I think any audience member would submit to this idea. It also means that people will probably feel the same emotion of sadness towards it as well. This falls into Reception Theory though as people may not respond to it as others do.
- The Cranberries - Linger
I got to get into the specifics in this task and take a detailed look on the structure of a music video and how it is broken down into individual parts that eventually make up a sequence. I will have to be conscious of this when making my music video with the specific detail. It would be logical to break down each sequence in my music video to the specific detail to manage it better and get exactly what I intended initially.
